Will St. Joseph County give $225,000 for trail to Niles?

SOUTH BEND — If two pleas for money succeed, it would allow St. Joseph County to finally pave a 2-mile gap in the trail that runs behind businesses in Roseland, from Darden Road north to the Michigan line.

First, the public could donate in a 24-hour giving spree on May 9, known as Give Local, where 67 local charities are vying for dollars. The Bike Michiana Coalition has pledged to match up to $15,000 of whatever is donated to the St. Joseph County Parks Fund on that day. That would secure the final dollars needed to pave the trail between Darden and Auten roads this year.

Second, county officials could give up to $225,000 in tourism funding, so that the trail could be extended from Auten to the state line.
