BMC Press Release for Bike to Work Week

The Bike Michiana Coalition announces the 4th Annual Bike to Work Week June 1st – 5th.

South Bend, IN (May 7, 2009) The Bike Michiana Coalition (BMC) is pleased to announce its 4th annual Bike to Work Week. The primary mission of this event is to provide a friendly individual and corporate challenge while promoting bicycling as a viable mode of transportation in Michiana.

During Bike to Work Week the BMC hopes to sign up at least 125 corporate teams and smaller individual groups to ride their bicycles to work during the week. There will be divisional prizes awarded at the end of the event for most miles ridden during the week.

Special events are scheduled during Bike to Work Week including a kick-off lunch on the Morris Civic Plaza on Monday June 1st and an Urban ride on Tuesday evening, June 2nd. The Urban ride will follow some of the newly established bike routes through out South Bend. The ride will consist of 5, 15 and 25 mile loops starting at Farmers Market in South Bend.

“We hope to have at least 1000 participants this year. As an employer there is no easier way to encourage team spirit than a friendly competition. We are looking for teams from 1 person to teams of 50 or more!”, says J.V. Peacock, chairperson of this years event.

About Michiana Bike to Work Week:

Michiana Bike to Work Week was founded in 2006 by a small, passionate group of bicycle advocates with the goal of promoting bicycles as a viable option for of daily transportation and creating bicycle awareness and safety. In 2007, 125 people participated in Bike to Work Week. Last year, with more corporate involvement and support, 487 individuals and 61 corporate teams participated by riding 14,563 miles to work combined.
