New Coal Line Trail

Residents react to South Bend trail plan

Route follows old coal line between Notre Dame, Lincoln Way West.

coallineSOUTH BEND — Residents had an opportunity Thursday to comment on plans for a new multi-use pathway on the near west side, between the University of Notre Dame and Lincoln Way West.

Coal Line Trail would extend along the old Norfolk Southern right-of-way, formerly used to transport coal to Notre Dame, from the East Bank Trail, across the St. Joseph River, under Portage Avenue to Lincoln Way West.

Phase one, slated for 2019, would span Lincoln Way West to Riverside Drive. Phase two, slated for 2020, would span Riverside to the East Bank Trail, just west of Indiana 933.

A future phase would extend the trail south to a point near Walnut Street and Western Avenue.

The trail would connect the west side to the wider trail system as well as the University of Notre Dame, Holy Cross College, Saint Mary’s College and other points of interest, including the Martin’s Super Market on Portage Avenue.
